Rap vs. Hip Hop: The Importance...
Rap vs. Hip Hop? An age old discussion, a new age debate...but often overlooked is the importance of each. Rap's effect on our culture is good for a quick fix, mainly due to its catchy hooks and animated dances. Yet, its temporary high is due to its lack of substance, individuality and souless beats. While on the other end of the spectrum, hip hop's effect on our culture takes us back to great memories and timeless vibes. Hip hop's presence will not only be felt because of soulful melodies and regional diversity but also for its thought provoking lyrics. The cause of rap is to immediatley effect the surface, whereas, the cause of hip hop is to gradually effect the spirit. Although both important, which will stand the test of time? More importantly, which will help us "grow" and "leave" us room to "blossom", the roots of Hip Hop or the stem of Rap???

Rap is that 3pc and a biscuit you got from popeyes about 10 minutes ago and smashed and there is nothing left. Hip Hop is that home cooked fried chicken, mac & cheese, cornbread, and collard greens that you just ate, and in a couple of hours can go back and get some more. Eat on it the next day and its even better. The rap game is very short term these days, but hip-hop has definitely made its mark and will be here til the end of time.
ReplyDeleteI agree whole-heartedly, for our generation hip hop has become a staple whereas we look forward to the beats and the positive message thay prevails. However, in recent years rap has become a staple that makes you laugh at the lack of originality and pray that parents have taught their children what great music is able to do to the soul.
ReplyDeleteI definitely appreciate this discussion to the fullest. I reflect back to Kanye West's debut album and how SOULFUL it was and would define that as HIP HOP. But, his latest music has falled to the hands to the fast cash syndrome and the "hunger" is missing. Rap & Hip hop will always be alive as long as mainstream America accepts and integrates it to thier POP music. So, they both will stand the test of time.
ReplyDeleteI think meaningful hiphop is back on its way soon but like it originated you might have to go to places like underground to get the substance that we are used too. Artist such as Drake(when hes not rhyming with little wayne) J. cole Wiz kalifah , Currensy, Lupe Fiasco, and Kanye West just to name a few are Bringing some thought provoking songs and cleverness back to it slowly all we can do is wait.
